Mehackit started off in 2014. Our founder, Henrietta Kekäläinen came up with a total masterplan: we should go into Finnish high schools and educate the youth with creative technology skills! Easy.

Multiple encounters later we are here: More than 50 Finnish high schools have the Mehackit creative technology course in their course curriculum and our first course will start in a Stockholm high school in September. We have held several technology youth events in Finland, Sweden, Norway, England and the U.S.

So what is the Mehackit high school course all about? It is a course where the students get to actually build technology themselves. We have two course options: 1) Introduction to Electronics and Programming with Arduino and 2) Introduction to Creative Programming with Processing. The Mehackit course lasts for seven weeks.

We at Mehackit highly courage students to see technology as something even bigger than just programming. The driving force behind Mehackit is to encourage young people to make their ideas happen – to create new products, services or games – using technology as a tool.

Mehackit organized a pilot course from November 2014 to March 2015 at Helsingin Suomalainen Yhteiskoulu called “Introduction to creative technologies”.

The course was held on a weekly basis with the guidance of Mehackit’s Otso Sorvettula. The course consisted of several different technology projects where the students were able to be creative while still getting active guidance and help from the Mehackit teacher. This is one of the most important things about the Mehackit high school course: we truly believe in mentorship and active building together with the Mehackit instructor.

“It was delighting to notice how eye-opening the Mehackit course was for  the students. They really made an effort to build inventive technology projects with outstanding results. Some of the projects included animations, Android games, Arduino robots, parachuting games and App Inventor activities,” explains Otso.

The dream of Mehackit is to support every young adult in the Nordics and globally to get creative, confident and curious about technology! You can read more about our growth story at Mehackit News.
